Trincomalee

Sri Lanka's secret east coast — diving, whales, and empty beaches

From Colombo

260 km

Best months

April, May, June, July

Best for

diving, beaches, whale watching

Trincomalee is Sri Lanka's east coast secret — a natural harbour of extraordinary size sheltering some of the clearest waters in Asia. While the south coast packs in visitors from December to April, Trincomalee thrives in the opposite season: May to September brings flat seas, crystal visibility, and the east coast's unique character. Pigeon Island Marine National Park just offshore holds healthy coral gardens and blacktip reef sharks that have rarely seen a diver. Marble Beach north of town is a long, uncrowded stretch of white sand that feels genuinely undiscovered. And between May and September, sperm and blue whales pass close to shore in numbers that rival Mirissa. Trincomalee rewards the traveller willing to cross the island.

Why visit Trincomalee

  • Pigeon Island Marine Park — best coral reef diving in Sri Lanka
  • Marble Beach — 3 km of white sand with almost no crowds
  • Fort Frederick — 17th-century Portuguese-Dutch fort with ocean views
  • Koneswaram Temple — hilltop Hindu temple at Swami Rock over the sea
  • Sperm whale and blue whale sightings (May–Sep, often visible from shore)
  • Completely opposite season to south coast — works when the south is rained out

Local expert tips

Insider knowledge for Trincomalee — the things guidebooks miss.

Best Timing

Come between May and September — this is when the east coast is completely calm while the south coast is in monsoon. The seasons are inverted.

🚌Getting Around

Trincomalee is 5–6 hours from Colombo. The direct train from Colombo Fort is comfortable and more reliable than the bus for this distance.

⚠️Watch Out

Bring your own snorkel to Pigeon Island — rental gear at the park is often poor quality. The park entry fee (USD 15) doesn't cover snorkel hire.

💎Hidden Gem

Nilaweli Beach north of Trincomalee is 14 km of near-empty white sand. Stay here instead of in town — it is far quieter and closer to Pigeon Island.

🍛Eat & Drink

Trincomalee's Tamil food culture means excellent kothu roti and string hoppers with crab curry at local restaurants — far cheaper than tourist areas.
