Ella is the hill country's crown jewel — a small ridge-top village suspended between tea estates, jungle, and cloud. The Nine Arches Bridge, where British-era stone arches frame passing trains against a backdrop of emerald hillside, has become one of Sri Lanka's most photographed scenes. But Ella earns its reputation beyond Instagram: the hike up Ella Rock rewards with sweeping views that stretch to the coast on clear days, and the train ride here from Kandy through a cascade of waterfalls and terraced gardens is a journey that will outlast any photograph. Stay at least two nights — Ella is one of those places that keeps giving.

Local expert tips
Insider knowledge for Ella — the things guidebooks miss.
Visit Nine Arches Bridge at 8:00–9:30 am — the light is perfect and the 8:47 am train is timed for photographers. Avoid midday crowds.
Ella Rock is easy to get lost on without a local guide. Hire one from Main Street for USD 10 — it is worth every cent for safety and the plant knowledge.
The slow train from Kandy (6–7 hrs) is an experience, not just transport. Book a reserved 2nd-class seat (USD 3–5) or splurge on the observation car.
Ella Gap viewpoint behind the bus stand is completely free and rivals Little Adam's Peak — almost nobody goes there before 7 am.
Curd and treacle (buffalo yoghurt with palm syrup) is the hill country dessert — every guest house serves it and it is extraordinary at USD 1.
