Mirissa

Sri Lanka's whale watching and surf beach capital

From Colombo

Best months

Best for

wildlife, surfing, beaches

Mirissa is where the whale watching world comes to Sri Lanka. Between December and April, blue whales — the largest animals on Earth — feed in the warm waters just a few kilometres offshore, and Mirissa's small fleet of whale watching boats offers access that few places on the planet can match. The beach itself is a perfect crescent of golden sand backed by a coconut-clad hill, with Parrot Rock island creating a natural breakwater and sunset platform. The town is laid back, the café scene is strong, and the surf break at the western end draws shortboarders from December to March. Mirissa is compact enough to walk everywhere but rich enough to justify four or five nights.

Why visit Mirissa

  • Blue whale watching — highest density blue whale sightings in the world (Dec–Apr)
  • Parrot Rock — walk the causeway at low tide for sunset views
  • Mirissa surf break — consistent December-to-March swells for shortboarders
  • Coconut Tree Hill — the famous photogenic palm-draped coastal viewpoint
  • Night fishing tours with local fishermen on traditional outrigger boats
  • Snorkelling reefs within swimming distance of the main beach

Local expert tips

Insider knowledge for Mirissa — the things guidebooks miss.

Best Timing

Book whale watching at least 2 days ahead — boats fill completely from mid-December to March. January–March is peak season for blue whales.

⚠️Watch Out

Seasickness is real on whale watching boats — take medication 1 hour before if you are sensitive. Swells can be 1.5–2 metres offshore.

🚌Getting Around

Mirissa is 25 km east of Galle — tuk-tuk takes 35 minutes (USD 6–8). Weligama in between is good for a day stop.

Best Timing

Avoid Mirissa from June to October — the south coast monsoon brings rough seas, most whale watching boats stop running, and many guesthouses close.

💎Hidden Gem

Secret Beach east of Parrot Rock is accessible only by water or a jungle path — almost no one finds it and it stays pristine even in peak season.
